Best Safari in Kenya
May 1, 2026 · By Teyezilla Travel Team
The best safari in Kenya for most first-time visitors is a 4 to 5 day Maasai Mara safari, ideally timed for the July to October wildebeest migration, when river crossings and predator activity are at their most dramatic.
Kenya has several excellent safari regions, but for a first visit, the Maasai Mara is almost always the right call: consistent big-five sightings, a manageable flight or drive from Nairobi, and a wide range of camps to fit different budgets.
How many days do you need?
4 to 5 days in the Maasai Mara is enough to settle into a rhythm of dawn and late-afternoon game drives without feeling rushed, and gives you a realistic chance at multiple predator sightings rather than just one lucky pass. Shorter 2 to 3 day trips work if you're combining the Mara with a beach extension in Zanzibar or Mombasa, but expect fewer game drives and less flexibility if the wildlife is quiet on a given day.
When to go
July to October is peak season, timed around the wildebeest migration's river crossings at the Mara River -- the single most dramatic wildlife spectacle in the region, but also the busiest and most expensive window. January to March offers good year-round resident wildlife (lion, elephant, giraffe, and more) with fewer vehicles at sightings and lower rates, a solid choice if the migration itself isn't the priority.
What a 4-day Maasai Mara itinerary looks like
- Day 1: Fly or drive in from Nairobi, afternoon game drive on arrival
- Day 2: Full day in the reserve, dawn and dusk game drives with a midday rest at camp
- Day 3: Optional visit to a Maasai village, or a second full day of game drives focused on a different part of the reserve
- Day 4: Final dawn game drive, then fly or drive back to Nairobi
What it costs
A 4-day Maasai Mara safari with a reputable operator typically starts around $950 per person, covering accommodation, game drives, park fees, and most meals -- prices climb quickly for peak migration season and premium camps.
