Kenya's Maasai Mara offers shorter flights from Nairobi and lower entry costs, while Tanzania's Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater cover a larger, more remote wilderness with higher park fees but often less crowded sightings -- both follow the same wildebeest migration, just on different sides of the border at different times of year.

Kenya and Tanzania share the same Serengeti-Mara ecosystem and the same great wildebeest migration, so the choice between them comes down to logistics, budget, and exactly what kind of experience you want -- not which country has 'better' wildlife.

Access and logistics

Kenya's Maasai Mara is a short 45-minute flight or a half-day drive from Nairobi, making it easier to combine with a shorter overall trip. Tanzania's Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater sit farther from Arusha, usually requiring internal flights between parks if you're covering more than one, which adds cost and travel time but also access to a genuinely larger and more remote wilderness.

Cost

Kenya's park fees and camp rates are generally lower than Tanzania's, particularly in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which carries some of the highest park fees in East Africa. A comparable multi-day safari in Tanzania typically costs more once you factor in the additional internal flights between parks.

Crowds

The Maasai Mara's accessibility means it draws more vehicles at popular sightings, especially during peak migration months. The Serengeti's much larger area spreads visitors out more, and can feel noticeably less crowded even during busy season, though the Ngorongoro Crater itself -- a small, contained caldera -- gets busy regardless of which side of the border you're on.

Migration timing

The migration is a year-round loop, not a single event: broadly, the herds are in Tanzania's southern Serengeti from December to March (calving season) and central/western Serengeti through the middle of the year, then cross into Kenya's Maasai Mara from July to October for the famous river crossings, before heading back south. Pick your country based on which phase of the migration you want to see.
