Egypt Travel Guide

A first Egypt trip typically covers 3 days in Cairo for the Pyramids of Giza and the Egyptian Museum, followed by a 3 to 4 day Nile cruise connecting Luxor's temples with Aswan, for a total of about a week.
Egypt's essential sites cluster into two regions -- Cairo in the north, and the Luxor-to-Aswan stretch of the Nile in the south -- and a first-time itinerary is really just deciding how to connect the two.
Cairo: 2-3 days
The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx are the obvious anchor, best visited early morning before the heat and the crowds build. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square (and the newer Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza) holds the bulk of the country's pharaonic artifacts, including Tutankhamun's treasures, and easily fills half a day on its own. Islamic Cairo's medieval quarter and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar are worth an afternoon for a change of pace from ancient sites.
The Nile cruise: 3-4 days
A short flight or overnight train connects Cairo to Luxor, where a multi-day cruise boat sails south to Aswan, stopping at temple sites along the way. Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings anchor the Luxor side of a multi-day Nile cruise itinerary; Philae Temple and the Aswan High Dam anchor the Aswan side. Cruising rather than driving between them means you unpack once and each stop is a short walk from the boat.
When to go
October to April is the comfortable window, avoiding the extreme summer heat that makes extended outdoor sightseeing genuinely difficult from June through August. December and January are the coolest and busiest months; October, November, and March offer a good balance of manageable heat and thinner crowds.
Entry requirements
Most nationalities can get an eVisa online in advance or a visa on arrival at major airports -- the eVisa is generally the smoother option since it avoids an arrivals-hall queue.
